Narrabeen Lagoon Clearance Completed Ahead of Christmas

Sand clearance works at the entrance to Narrabeen Lagoon have been completed in time for the Christmas period, restoring water flow and improving flood resilience across the surrounding area.

Northern Beaches Council confirmed on Wednesday, 10 December that the removal of sand at the lagoon entrance near the Ocean Street bridge at North Narrabeen had been finalised after several months of work.

The project involved clearing a significant build-up of sand that had restricted the lagoon’s connection to the ocean.

Improving Flood Protection

Around 30,000 cubic metres of sand were removed from the lagoon entrance as part of the works. Council said the clearance will help water move more freely between the lagoon and the ocean, reducing flood risks for nearby homes and businesses during heavy rainfall.

The sand removed from the lagoon entrance has been reused to replenish sections of South Narrabeen and Collaroy Beach, Lagoon Street Reserve, and eroded areas along the Pelican Path.

Community Impact During Works

The clearance program began in September and continued through spring, with machinery operating in and around the lagoon entrance and nearby beach areas.

Council acknowledged the patience shown by residents, businesses and visitors while the works were underway, particularly as the area remained busy throughout the warmer months.

Ongoing Lagoon Management

The completed works form part of Council’s Narrabeen Lagoon Entrance Management Strategy, which aims to balance flood mitigation, environmental protection and public access.

The project was supported by funding from the Commonwealth Government through the NSW Flood Recovery and Resilience Grant Program.

While the lagoon entrance has now reopened, Council noted that water levels inside the lagoon are currently low. With ongoing ocean swells, there is a possibility the entrance could close again. If that occurs, further works may be carried out when conditions allow.

How the Lagoon Entrance Is Managed

Council has also directed residents to additional information on lagoon management available through its website.
